The latest and greatest
The Quiet Sun jets found by IMaX and described in Borrero et al. have also been found in Hinode/SP as demonstrated in Martínez Pillet et al. The blue and red circles indicate the positions where the IMaX jests are detected in Hinode/SP.
This instrument also allows us to distinguish blueshifts from redshiifts. Their spatial coincidence is strongly suggestive of reconnection in the Quiet Sun (internetwork) fields.
Current Work
IMaX quiet sun cancellation magnetogram. These magnetograms were first introduced by Sainz Dalda & Martínez Pillet and they outline those pixels that harbor opposite polarities during the time interval used in the average.
Network points are basically zero as they are unipolar, noise introduces offsets and boundaries between the opposite polarity features are bright and can be found everywhere.
The fact that there are regions of opposite polarity contact everywhere on the Quiet Sun suggests that all field patches must be interacting with neighbors of opposite polarity. These IMaX movies are the same but with different scaling.
On the right scaling is ±5 10-4 and on the left it is ±5 10-3. It is evident that there is much to be seen when we improve the sensitivity below the standard 10-3.
Student's Corner
In his PhD C. Kuckein has published two papers that show that this orphan penumbra observed in the photosphere is nothing but a flux rope that emerges from below and gets temporarily stuck there. See Kuckein et al. I and Kuckein et al. II.
