SUMMARY:The rotation of cool main sequence stars: measurements, description
 s, and connections
DESCRIPTION:The rotation of cool main sequence stars: measurements, descrip
tions, and connections\nDr. Sydney A. Barnes\n\nThe rotation rate of a coo
l star provides an additional method beyond the usual ones to characterize
and \nunderstand its behavior. Increasingly large samples of rotation per
iods are now emerging from both ground- \nand space-based work. This talk
will present some systematic behaviors of these rotation periods, includin
g \ndependencies on age and mass, especially as probed by open cluster stu
dies. The results suggest that it is \noften possible to derive an age for
a cool star (and its planets) from such rotation period measurements, via
\na procedure called gyrochronology. This talk addresses the possibilitie
s of this emerging area of work, and \nalso certain complexities and cauti
ons that should be considered in this Kepler, TESS, and soon, PLATO era.
