 s at the challenges in developing instruments for  extremely large telesco
 pes.  It then discusses the impact of these on  the ELT first light i
 nstruments and their current status.   The  instruments are HARM
 ONI, a visible - Near IR integral filed unit;  MOARY/MICADO a multi-conjug
 ate AO system and camera and METIS  a thermal  IR spectrometer and ca
 mera.
