SUMMARY:A historical perspective on the concept of galaxy size
DESCRIPTION:A historical perspective on the concept of galaxy size \nDr. Nu
shkia Chamba\n\nIn this seminar, we will explore how the development of i
maging techniques, from the use of photographic plates in the 1930s to cu
rrent CCD imaging, impacted the definition and measurement of galaxy size
. We then propose an alternative, new physically motivated size defi
nition based on the gas density threshold required for star formation tha
t challenges our current understanding of the concept of galaxy size. The
new physically motivated size measure can be adopted in upcoming de
ep, wide imaging surveys such as the LSST and ongoing efforts in preparat
ion for this era will also be discussed.\n \nZoom:\nhttps://rediris.
