SUMMARY:IAU G5 seminar: " How White Dwarfs Get Their Metals"
DESCRIPTION:IAU G5 seminar: " How White Dwarfs Get Their Metals"\nDr. Scott
Kenyon\n\n \nMany (perhaps most) nearby white dwarfs have strong&nbs
p;\nabsorption lines from Ca, Si, Mg, Al, and other metals \non
optical and ultraviolet spectra. Abundance analyses \nsuggest the ens
emble of metals has a composition similar \nto asteroids or the cores
of rocky planets. The atmospheric\ndiffusion times are much smaller than
their ages. Thus, the \nmetals must be continually replenished.
I will describe \nobservations of these systems and outline an evolu
tionary \npath that allows material from an erstwhile planetary syste
m\nto end up on the surface of the white dwarf remnant of an\nA-type main
sequence star.
