CanariCam's Capabilities
CanariCam will have four science modes (direct imaging, spectroscopy, polarimetry, and coronagraphy) and two engineering modes (pupil and window imaging) with capabilities enabled by state-of-the-art design and components.

The current optical layout is shown below. It is not totally frozen until the instrument has passed its Critical Design Review [CDR] in early 2002, thus some numbers may change slightly as the final design and optimisation proceed.

The unfolded optical layout of CanariCam as at PDR. Note that M3 is out of the page.

Observing modes (follow the link for a technical description of each mode):

  • Long slit spectroscopy (find out more ).
  • Imaging polarimetry (find out more ).
  • Imaging coronagraphy (find out more ).
In addition, there will be the following engineering modes for diagnostic purposes:
  • Pupil imaging mode (find out more ).
  • Window imaging mode (find out more ).
