spectrograph for GTC

News

  • January 2022: Looking for funds and planning the acquisition of a new detector and cooling system
  • December 2021: After a series of cleanups and tests we are unable to restore the CCD to regular operation. There are multiple issues such as an elevated dark current and degraded cosmetics that persist
  • March 2021: Not working! The efforts to fix the cooling system of the CCD have not produced any improvements. We take the system back to Tenerife for further testing
  • February 22, 2021: The cryo components of the camera are replaced with spares available on Friday 19, cooling down as it should (see graph below, shot by Panchi Gomez, IAC). The camera remained cooled and stable the entire weekend so we proceed to ship it back to GTC immediately.
After the replacement of the cooling components, the CCD cools down as expected. Photo taken by Panchi Gomez (IAC).
  • February 4, 2021: The camera head is taken to Tenerife for testing.
  • February 2, 2021: Special call for observing time with GTC (HORuS or OSIRIS). A total of 230 hr of GTC time for the period April 1 - July 31, 2021 is being offered to the Spanish community -- deadline is February 28 -- for details see this link
  • January, 2021: Cabinet B with cryo-cooler is installed but fails to cool down the CCD
  • November/December, 2020: The cryo-cooler stopped working properly, resulting in a quasi-periodic temperature variation (see graph below, taken by David Garcia, GTC), and a replacement is sent to La Palma
  • Regular variations in temperature/pressure observed in the HORuS criostat. Photo David Garcia (GTC).
  • October 1, 2020: HORuS Commissioning data (November 2018- March 2019) is now available on this site
  • September 15, 2020: GTC will not offer HORuS in semester 2021A. We are working hard to be back in 2021B!
  • September 2020: Multiple upgrades to the HORuS chain with an improved removal of cosmic rays, and a few format in which orders are combined
  • July 2020: Increased demand for HORuS from about 10% in semesters 19B and 20A to about 20% in 20B (figure courtesy of A. Cabrera, GTC)
  • Pie charts showing the observing time requested per instrument
  • Deadline for Semester 2020B (September 1, 2020 through February 28, 2021) is 27 April 2020
  • Talk at ICE (Barcelona): HORuS, higher resolution for GTC, March 31, 12:00 -- CANCELLED (COVID-19)
