(CP4) - Solar Flares |
Driven by reconfigurations of coronal magnetic fields, flares represent violent energy conversion and release processes in the solar atmosphere, accompanied by particle acceleration, strong heating and mass motions. Using a combination of imaging data and coronal field reconstructions, the research of the SOLAIRE network aims at characterizing the magnetic structure and 3D evolution of flares. By specialized test-particle and particle-in-cell models, the acceleration of particles in a realistic flare environment is studied. A self-consistent treatment of macroscopic MHD and microscopic particle acceleration and transport is also being undertaken, with high-quality observational guidance from data from the space missions RHESSI, TRACE, GOES/SXI, SDO and Solar-B.
