Nataliia Shchukina

Stay at the IAC: 26/12/18 to 08/02/19

Research line: Solar Physics

Dr. Shchukina is a corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU) and a senior scientist of the Solar Physics Departmemt of the Main Astronomical Observatory of the NASU.

Her research interests cover various areas of astrophysics, like multilevel radiative transfer, solar and stellar spectropolarimetry, solar magnetism, helioseismology, and quantitative stellar spectroscopy. Dr. Shchukina has been the Principal Investigator of various research projects of the NASU and she has participated in some space experiments, such as the CORONAS-I and CORONAS-F missions for studying solar irradiance fluctuations. She has also participated in several international organizations (e.g., during 2012-2015 she was Vice-president of the "Solar Radiation and Structure" Commission of the International Astronomical Union).

She has received various fellowships for visiting European research centers, including the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) where she has worked with Prof. Javier Trujillo Bueno in the fields of multilevel radiative transfer and solar and stellar spectro-polarimetry. For example, in 2014 she spent a sabbatical year at the IAC working as Severo Ochoa professor, while presently (2019) she is holding a three-months IAC visiting professor position funded by the Jesús Serra Foundation. In 2005 Nataliia Shchukina was awarded the M. P. Barabashov prize of the National Academy of Ukraine for outstanding studies in stellar physics. In 2018 the President of Ukraine awarded her the Order of Princess Olga for many years of fruitful scientific activity. Dr. Shchukina is a member of the POLMAG research group, contributing to the development of WP-3 and WP-6.
