A study of sixty-one massive over-contact binary candidates from the OGLE survey of the Magellanic Clouds

We predict massive over-contact binaries to have smooth equal-depth light curves due to their mass ratios of q ≈ 1 and consequently, equal-temperature components. From the OGLE database, we mine 47 and 14 predominantly B-type over-contact binaries, in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds respectively, with periods of ≈ 0.6 − 1 d, along with a few wider O-type systems. This sample is consistent with our theoretically expected numbers and colour-magnitude and period distributions. Additionally, we find that binaries nearing contact have periods as large as 4.5 d and mass ratios of q ≈ 0.4 − 0.95, some of which may masquerade as over-contact binaries with smooth light curves and unequal-depth eclipses, leading to potential observational misclassifications
