SIEminar: "Feel like at /home by knowing your Environment", by Nicola - 10 May 2006 at 12.30 in the Aula

Certainly everybody wishes to live comfortably in his or her own home, by keeping it organized and tidy, with nice and functional furniture, things kept in their appropriate place, etc. The same should apply to our "computing" home: knowing our /home environment and improving it will help make our computer work more efficient and pleasant. In this talk we will have a look at the Environment Variables, explaining what they are, how they can be defined or changed, and warn against "/home disasters" made by incorrect modifications to such variables or in the startup files.

XHTML/CSS course at the end of May

The highly acclaimed "XHTML and CSS: standards-complying Web design" course is back! Those of you who missed the course given last year, and new scientists who joined the IAC recently have the opportunity to participate in these interesting interactive classes. Jorge will give an introduction to XHTML and Cascading Style Sheets, and teach how to build attractive personal or project pages by following modern standards. The course will be held on 23, 24 and 25 May from 16:00 to 18:00; registration instructions will be communicated by email in a few days.

New SIE fellow

Borja Jim énez has joined the SIE de Investigación y Enseñanza as the holder of a 6-month fellowship. His tasks are to collaborate in the update of the RedHat distribution to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 - kernel 2.6, assist in the migration of existing astronomical packages to work under the new kernel (recompiling and reinstalling them when necessary), and help out users experiencing problems after the kernel update. He will also participate in testing and installing software for the new 64-bit machines and for the new Beowulf.

Tips for working from outside the IAC!

Are you away from the Institute but would still like to check up the Intranet pages? or read the e-mail using Thunderbird? or run your local copy of IDL but using the IAC license? Well then, you will have to check out this article, where we show you how to do it step by step!
