Emacs   
Description Emacs is an "advanced, self-documenting, customizable, extensible real-time display editor".
Version installed Ubuntu 22.04: v27.1 (from the Ubuntu repositories).
Usage At the command prompt, type:
emacs

The behaviour of Emacs can be customized by the file /home/user/.emacs, and by setting resources (colours, fonts, etc) in /home/user/.Xdefaults

An alternative editor is XEmacs, sort of a good-looking Emacs with a different flavour. A simpler and maybe now more popular editor is Nedit.
