Instrument modes and AOTs

Two different observation schemes are offered with the PACS spectrometer:
line and range spectroscopy.

PACS spectrometer AOTs.
Line Scan Spectroscopy Mode  A limited number of relatively narrow emission/absorption lines can be observed for either a single spectroscopic FOV (0.78' x 0.78') or for a larger map. Background subtraction is achieved either through standard chopping/nodding, for faint/compact sources, or through 'frequency-switching' techniques for line measurement of the grating mechanism of bright extended sources. There are two different AOTs in this mode:
    - Line Scan Spectroscopy with chopping-nodding

    - Line Scan Spectroscopy with wavelength switching
Range Spectroscopy Mode  A freely defined wavelength range is scanned by stepping through the respective angles of the grating, synchronized with the chopper. Both arrays will are used at a time.

Documents

"PACS Observer's Manual" is the reference manual for PACS observers and the Herschel Observation Planning Tool is the Herschel-Spot (HSpot) User's Guiden.
