Research line: Galactic Formation and Evolution
Dr. Pérez González will give a Severo Ochoa Seminar at the IAC entitled Reconstructing the formation of massive galaxies from their SHARDS on 2014 May 15th.
Dr. P. G. Pérez González is currently full professor at the Astrophysics Department of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain).
From 2007 to 2011, Prof. Pérez González was a Ramón y Cajal Associate Professor, also at the Astrophysics Department, UCM. Previously, he was a postdoc at the UCM within ASTRID, a project supported by the Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid. From 2003 to 2006, he was a postdoc at Steward Observatory, University of Arizona, working as a member of the Spitzer/MIPS Instrument Team.
Prof. Pérez González's research is focused on the study of galaxy formation and evolution. His expertise covers three main aspects in this field: 1) analize extended nearby galaxies with resolved star-forming complexes to understand what triggers star formation in individual galaxies (see, e.g., Pérez-González et al. 2003 or Pérez-González et al. 2006); 2) characterize the population of star-forming galaxies at intermediate and high redshift to understand how galaxies formed and evolved from the beginning of the Universe (e.g., Pérez-González et al. 2005); 3) study stellar populations in galaxies with ultra-deep data covering the whole electromagnetic spectrum (see, e.g., Pérez-González et al. 2008, 2013).
Pablo G. Pérez-González's research is currently focused on the analysis of medium-band ultra-deep data taken with GTC within the Survey for High-z Absorption Red and Dead Sources (SHARDS). SHARDS is an ESO/GTC Large Program started in 2010 and aiming at studying the stellar populations in faint and distant galaxies using spectro-photometric data from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared wavelengths. More specifically, SHARDS' main goal is understanding the formation history of massive quiescent galaxies at high redshift, one of the most challenging population for current cosmological models.
Pablo G. Pérez González' s visit was aimed to advance in common projects with several researchers at the IAC. Among these projects were: (1) the collaboration with Dr. Ignacio Trujillo and his group, focused on the detailed study of massive galaxies and their satellites at low, intermediate and high redshift using multi-wavelength data from SHARDS and the Rainbow database. The results were published in Martín-Navarro et al. 2015. And (2) the selection and analysis of star-forming galaxies in the very early Universe, a project in collaboration with Dr. José Miguel Rodríguez Espinosa, Dr. Casiana Muñoz-Tuñón and their group.
