Leticia Carigi

Stay at the IAC: 30/11/2013 to 04/01/2014.
Research line: Galactic Formation and Evolution
Currently Dr. Carigi is a full professor at the Institute of Astronomy (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico). In 2010 she got the UNAM Award "Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz".
Dr. Cariggi gave a Seminar at the IAC on 2013 December 12th entitled M33 as a galaxy example that connects the evolution of big and dwarf galaxies in the Local Group.

Dr. Leticia Carigi finished her PhD in Astronomy (advisor: Dr. Gustavo Bruzual) at Universidad Central de Venezuela and Centro de Investigaciones de Astronomia, in 1994. Between 1995 and 1997, she was awarded an Postdoctoral Fellowship of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM). Since 1997 she is a researcher at the Instituto de Astronomia-UNAM and currently she is a full professor (tenured).

Her primary research interests are Cosmochemistry of the Local Group and Astrobiology at galactic scales. Dr. Carigi has been advisor of some degree thesis in Physics and Chemistry and of several Master and PhD thesis in Astrophysics.

At the IAC she collaborated with the Severo Ochoa postdoctoral fellow Sebastián Hidalgo, within the Galactic Formation and Evolution group, on the study of the chemical evolution of dwarf galaxies of the Local Group, particularly on Cetus, Tucana, LGS-3, and Phoenix. Using the SFHs obtained from deep color-magnitude diagram obtained from HST, they are deriving chemical enrichment models for these four isolated galaxies. Their preliminary results show that their chemical histories can not be described by simply closed-box models, pointing to strong winds which may drive the chemical evolution of these galaxies.

List of papers (in progress):
