The GTC Adaptive Optics (GTCAO) instrument will provide single-conjugate natural guide star adaptive optics capabilities to the FRIDA instrument installed in the GTC telescope. The instrument implements a real time closed loop with a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor and a deformable mirror. Besides that standard operation, the instrument sends information to GTC for performing fine control of the telescope primary and secondary mirrors for desaturating the deformable mirror and optimizing its performance. This paper presents the software design for the Real Time Control System in charge of implementing all the functionality related with the real time control loop.
