Evan Skillman

Stay at the IAC: 21/09/2015 to 16/10/2015
Research line: Formation and Evolution of Galaxies

Prof. Evan Skillman is giving a Severo Ochoa seminar at the IAC on October 1 2015 entitled "Dwarf Galaxies and the Reionization of the Universe".

He is currently director of the Minnesota Institute for Astrophysics at the University of Minnesota.

Prof. Evan Skillman received his doctoral degree (PhD) from the University of Washington in 1984 under the supervision of Bruce Balick. After postdoctoral positions with the Netherlands Foundation for Radio Astronomy and the University of Texas, he started his position at the University of Minnesota in 1989. He has taken sabbatical leaves at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching, Germany and the Institute for Astrophysics in Cambridge, England.

His research interests include nebular chemical abundances (including the determination of the primordial helium abundance), stellar populations and star formation histories of galaxies (especially dwarf galaxies), and the physics of the interstellar media of galaxies.

He has been a member of several science teams working on large projects (ACS Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury, PI: Dalcanton, Local Volume Legacy, PIs: Kennicutt, Lee; Local Cosmology from Isolated Dwarfs, PI: Gallart; Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury, PI: Dalcanton, VLA-ANGST, PI: Ott, Panchromatic STARBurst IRregular Dwarf Survey, PI: McQuinn; DUST in Nearby Galaxies with Spitzer, PI: Boyer) He has been an author on 224 refereed publications with over 11,800 citations.

During his visit to the IAC, he will collaborate with Drs. Antonio Aparicio, Carme Gallart, Sebastian Hidalgo and Matteo Monelli on the Initial Star formation and Lives of ANDromeda Satellites (ISLANDS) project which is a large Hubble Space Telescope project to study the lifetime star formation histories of a representative sample of dwarf galaxy satellites of the Andromeda galaxy
