Peter B. Stetson

Research line: Galactic Formation and Evolution

Dr. Stetson is Principal Reseach Officer at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics, Canada and adjunct Professor at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Victoria, Canada.

Before joining the DAO in 1983, and after his Yale PhD in 1979, he had been a Research Fellow at Yale University and a Carnegie Fellow, at Mount Wilson and Las Campanas Observatories, USA. He has received several prestigious awards, such as the Petrie Prize of the Canadian Astronomical Society (1991), the Gold Medal for the Natural Sciences of the Science Council of British Columbia (1994), the Maria and Eric Muhlmann Award of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (2000), and the George van Biesbroeck Prize of the Americal Astronomical Society (2008). He is also a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (2006).

 
He is author of 263 refereed papers, which have received a total of 20738 citations. He is well known as the author of widely used software such as DAOPHOT and ALLFRAME. He is an expert in the study of stellar clusters and nearby galaxies.
 
At the IAC he collaborated with members of the research line 'Late type galaxies in the Local Universe' (C. Gallart, M. Monelli, C. Martínez) in a number of projects, in relation to the study of the star formation history of the Magellanic Clouds and other nearby galaxies and the study of variable stars in Sculptor, IC1613, NGC6822 and other nearby galaxies.
