Strategic view
There is an immense untapped potential in dark matter research that can be unlocked through the utilization of the Canary Islands observatories and the astrophysical expertise of the IAC. This opportunity can be realized by focusing on three strategically important research areas that offer significant synergies between cutting-edge theoretical dark matter research and the observational capabilities of the IAC and the network:
-
High-energy astroparticle physics (STRAT1): This connects to the experimental astrophysics group at the IAC, operating and exploiting the Cherenkov telescopes in the observatories ( MAGIC , CTA and ASTRI ), but also to the activities of the network on indirect dark matter searhces in stars and extreme astrophysicsal environments.
-
Radio Wave, gravitational waves and early universe (STRAT2): This connects to the observational and instrumentation expertise in microwave astronomy of the IAC but also with the emerging expertise on gravitational waves. This includes experiments measuring the CMB, like QUIJOTE or the upcoming TMS, LSPE-STRIP and GroundBIRD.
-
Galactic structure and dynamics (STRAT3): This connects to the top class groups in the IAC either working on observations (infrared and visible) or numerical simulations of galaxy formation and evolution. The SWOT diagram below illustrates the Strengths of the IAC synergizing with the Opportunities opened by UNDARK to address the Weaknesses and also mitigate the Threats.
