1st COST NanoSpace Joint Scientific Meeting
9th-11th of February 2023
Jožef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia
General Action Scope
The main aim and objective of the COST Action NanoSpace (“Carbon molecular nanostructures in space”; CA21126) is to advance the fundamental understanding of the physics and chemistry of cosmic carbon nanomaterials (nanocarbons; nC) and their relevance in non-terrestrial environments by promoting the interdisciplinary combination of state-of-the-art astronomical, laboratory, and theoretical studies, among others.
The main scientific challenges are the following:
- What nanocarbon species are present in space and how can we identify them?
- What are the chemical pathways that lead to their formation and destruction?
- What is the role of nanocarbon species in non-terrestrial environments? This is in cosmic and in prebiotic chemistry (astrobiology) and in astrophysics.
In order to attack the scientific challenge, NanoSpace proposes an interdisciplinary approach, combining the expertise from a wide range of disciplines like observational astronomy, laboratory astrophysics, astrobiology, theoretical chemistry, synthetic chemistry, molecular reaction dynamics, material science, spectroscopy, graph theory, and data science (AI, big data). The ambitious interdisciplinary nature of NanoSpace has the advantage that nanocarbons have potential applications in nanotechnology. Researchers and innovators from all these fields are thus welcome to participate both in the meeting and in the Action as Working Group members, applying here .
NanoSpace takes advantage of the recent successful operation of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the new facilities that can better mimic the interstellar medium (ISM) on the ground as well as the recent developments in the computational facilities and in laboratory techniques.
The Action is organized in four interdisciplinary Working Groups (WG):
- WG#1: “The Cosmic Inventory of nanocarbons”.
- WG#2: “Processing, reactivity and relaxation pathways of nC”.
- WG#3: “Role and Importance of nC in Non-Terrestrial Environments”.
- WG#4: “Impact, Inclusiveness and Outreach”.
Specific 1st Action Meeting Scope
This is the first COST NanoSpace Joint Scientific Meeting (in person), which will mark the start-up of the Action, knowing each other towards a common understanding of the scientific challenge, starting the interaction, learning, and collaboration and integrating young and ITC researchers. The main scope of this first meeting is thus two-fold:
- To start building a common scientific language.
- To start understanding and accepting the challenge and the limitations of the laboratory, theoretical and astronomical approaches.
- NanoSpace overview and updates.
- WGs overview (main challenges, aims, and tasks).
- Flash oral presentations by NanoSpace participants/groups (5 + 2 min).
- Breaking scientific news oral presentations (12 + 3 min).
- Invited key Action talks (25 + 5 min).
- Poster sessions.
The planned schedule is a joint scientific meeting (9 and 10 February 2023; full days) and a Management Committee (MC) meeting (11 February 2023; half day from 8:30 to 13 hrs). Note that only MC members and individuals with Action leadership positions are attending the MC meeting. The final scientific program and MC agenda as well as the abstracts for the different contributions (invited, oral, flash, and posters) can be found here in the Book of Abstracts .
Registration and Abstract Submission

Venue - How to reach Jožef Stefan Institute (Jamova cesta 39, Ljubljana)
BY PLANE: Ljubljana Jože Pučnik airport is about 20 km from the center of Ljubljana and it is connected with several cities in Europe. From the airport, you can take a shuttle ( www.goopti.si ) or a taxi. Price of a shuttle is 12 € (one direction) and it takes you to a desired address. The price of a taxi varies from about 30 to 45 €. Shuttle should be reserved in advance!
Another convenient airports are:
-Venice (Marco Polo airport) which is about 250 km away from Ljubljana.
-Trieste airport (Ronchi, 120 km).
-Airport in Zagreb (Franjo Tuđman airport, about 130 km).
These airports are better connected with low-fare airlines flying from European capitals. To get from these airports to Ljubljana and back you can use GoOPti transport ( www.goopti.si ). Approximately, the price of transportation Ljubljana - Marco Polo airport (one direction) is about 30-60 €, price depend on how much in advance you make a reservation and on a time window. Shuttle should be reserved in advance!
BY CAR: On the Ljubljana – Zagreb (A2) highway and Koper – Ljubljana (A1) highway take exit Ljubljana-west. Drive straight along Tržaška road. Turn right on the fourth semaphore crossing to Jadranska street and then at the first semaphore crossing turn right on Jamova street). The Institute is 20 m ahead on your left.

BY BUS: buses No. 1 and 6. A bus stop of the city bus line no. 1 (direction Mestni log) stops just infront of the Institute at Jadranska street (bust stop coming from the city center: Jadranska) while the bus stop of the bus line No. 6 (direction Dolgi most) is near by at Tržaška road (bus stop coming from the city center: Glince) and is approximately 350 m away from the institute. For the bus transportation you need to have an Urbana card ( http://www.jhl.si/en/single-city-card-urbana ) which you can buy in shops or kiosks located at Ljubjana’s streets.
